Summer Break for Dances
A Happy Summer to All, from Hall of the Above!
A personal note from Jennifer & Daniel:
It was three years ago this June that we sat down in the middle of this vacant space and co-signed the lease while our daughters looked on and played “Mission Impossible” on speakerphone. It certainly did feel impossible at times, but after a year and a half of permitting and construction we finally re-opened this iconic building.
Since then, members of the community have rented it for weddings, fundraisers, Quinceaneras, and concerts — exactly the diversity of uses we had in mind when we named our venture “Hall of the Above.” We’ve also produced our own public happenings — such as sold-out Halloween and Valentine’s parties, our Centennial Open House, and Sunday dance events featuring classes and live music.
We’ve got two more dance events before a summer pause in programming to consider changes in format to boost attendance. Swing, Salsa and Country Line Dancing will return in September. Please let us know if you have any suggestions. As always, if you’d like to rent the space for your own event, you know where to find us!
sunday Swing night
Join us for SUNDAY SWING NIGHT at Hall of the Above
🎷 Featuring a new-to-HOTA band, The doRiaN Mode! 🎷
The doRiaN Mode explores the Great American Songbook as it dishes up vintage jazz, swinging R&B, and soulful ballads, from the sounds of 1920s speakeasies and 1930s big-band swing to 1940s jump blues and the rollicking R&B of Ruth Brown. Vocalist and bassist Dorian Bartley leads this Petaluma-based acoustic quartet featuring Robby Elfman on piano/clarinet, Peter Graves on sax, and Tony Blake on drums. Whether they’re stomping at the Savoy in salute to Count Basie or paying homage to R&B legend Etta James, the doRiaN Mode brings elegance to classic American music.
💃🏻 Jasmine Worrell, the Bay Area’s top swing dance instructor, will offer a class from 4:15 – 5:00

Spike Sikes and his awesome hotcakes - Salute to American Graffiti edition
Our building will be open Saturday, May 16 for Petaluma's Salute to American Graffiti car show. Stop in for a cold soda pop and a place to sit down.
And then stick around for Spike Sikes and his Awesome Hotcakes in the evening from 7:30–10PM.
Doors (and the bar) will open at 6:30PM.
Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door (cash or card).
Just The Right Recipe… The most frequently heard comment after a Spike’s Awesome Hotcakes gig goes something like this –
“No one is making this kind of music anymore!”
But what, exactly, is “this kind of music?”
Like hotcakes themselves, it goes by many names. Soul. Swing. Rhythm & Blues. Jazz. Jump. It’s a sound that’s classic and simple, but when it’s done right, it hits the spot, and has you grinning from ear to ear. Spike has spent years searching for this sound.
From the Texas blues joints he cut his teeth in to the funky halls of New Orleans, he was always studying the music, trying to find just the right recipe. It makes perfect sense that he found his bandmates in Sonoma County, a music scene that has fostered many eclectic artists for decades.
What he didn’t know was how hungry audiences were for “this kind of music.” You might say they’ve been eating it up like…Hotcakes!
🍸 We will have a cash bar serving alcoholic drinks, mocktails and other beverages.

Renegade Orchestra at Hall of the Above
Renegade Orchestra - The Beauty of a Symphony, the Soul of a Rock Band
Welcome to the Renegade Orchestra - it’s time to throw out all the old conventions of a quiet, sleepy, stuffy show of musicians locked in straight jackets of tradition.
Clap your hands, tap your feet, and yell all you want - the Renegade Orchestra embraces the virtuosic skills of top bay area musicians and turns them loose on songs orchestras have never or maybe shouldn’t do. No sleepy pop songs, no overly-lush jazz standards, but the pure unbridled fury of what an orchestra can truly do
“Classical Rebels.” The Bohemian
“The Renegade Orchestra would rather tackle Hendrix than Handel.” Mercury News
"If there’s one piece of advice I would give to anyone interested in seeing this group perform, it would be to expect the unexpected, or better yet, leave your expectations at the door and go in prepared for a ride. If there’s one thing that’s for certain, it’s that this writer will be catching them again the next time they perform in town." Napa Valley Register
“...Under the baton of co-founder, guitarist and conductor Jason Eckl, [the Renegade Orchestra] turn Nina Simone’s “Sinnerman” into a shimmering string-centric odyssey, capture the classic helter-skelter vibe in Paul McCartney’s and John Lennon’s “Helter Skelter,” find the funk in “What’d I Say” by Ray Charles and crash with vibratory verve through Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze.” East Bay Express
Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door.
